A few weeks ago Google announced a new API for Android that would allow developers to tap into an index (so to speak) of your device. This index would span across more than just apps, but could also include contacts, settings options, and more.

Until now, though, this feature was not able to be accessed due to limited app functionality. But with the Android 12 Beta 5 update, the Pixel Launcher can now take advantage of this new feature.

In Android 12, you can swipe up from the Home Screen to bring up the app drawer. When you do, you’ll see the typical search box at the top of the screen that you’re (likely) already used to.

Except this search box has added functionality now.

By default, this search box will now comb through your apps, contacts, settings shortcuts, and pixel tips. But we can exclude any (or all) of these categories if we want using a simple toggle system shown in the video.

Let me show you how this new Android 12 feature works on my Pixel 4a using the stock launcher. We could see other custom launchers add support for this in the future. . .but for now it’s only working on this version of Android with the Pixel Launcher.
