The foreign media Sumahodigest reported that the reason why there are rumors of a “new name” on the Internet is mainly because Sony introduced a new three-lens design for the first time when it launched the “Xperia 1” flagship model in 2019. The meaning of “start over”, the simple and powerful Arabic numeral “1” is used to replace the previous flagship XZ series.
From 2020 to 2021, the second-generation Xperia 1 II and the third-generation Xperia 1 III will be launched in sequence. According to the logic of such naming rules, it is reasonable to say that Xperia 1 will usher in the fourth generation of “Xperia 1 IV” (tentative name) in 2022 this year.
However, considering that the number four is not a favorite model of many manufacturers, and during the period from 2016 to 2018 during the Sony Xperia XZ series period, the models were also from “XZ, XZ2 to XZ3”. The XZ4, which was originally intended as a successor in 2019, was changed to a new naming method that year, and it was renamed “Xperia 1”. Such a change has also been interpreted by the outside world that Sony may be trying to avoid using the number four, or that the name of the series model adopts a naming cycle that changes every three years.
