Epic V Apple Day one
Epic V Apple is finally underway, in a case that basically no-one wants. In Epic’s Opening statement they said:
“The evidence will show that Epic stands behind its decisions every step of the way,” said Forrest in her opening statement. “When they pick up the iPhone, users enter a different world. They are locked into a closed platform where they can only download apps from Apple, and each and every time they purchase in the app, a 30% tax is imposed.”

They likened the cut to if Ford was taking a cut of 30% every time you stopped to fill up your Ford Car at the gas station. However, that statement forgets the fact that Apple owns the gas stations. Gas stations, and stores in general are not obliged to sell their goods at the same price they buy them for, or just to add on their operating costs. They’re allowed to make a profit and price their products as they like. If you own the gas station, you get to take your cut.

On Apple’s side, Apple’s attorneys argued that the App Store had unleashed a decade of economic growth for developers of games and Apps

“Businesses have been launched that would not have otherwise existed,” were it not for the App Store, Dunn said. “Jobs have been created worldwide. … A $20 billion company has decided that it doesn’t want to pay for Apple’s innovations anymore. So Epic is here, demanding that this court force Apple to get into its App Store untested and untrusted apps — something that Apple has never done.”

Apple pointed out that 30% was the defect standard in the industry, from Microsoft, Sony and many others, and that they’ve reduced this to developers making less than $1million per year down to 15%, and that typically before the App Store, publishers charged around 70% commission. We’ll keep up to date on the case as it goes on.

MacBook Pro 14 & 16 inch Display production ramps
Display partner TSMT has been able to “Address technical challenges” in the production of mini LED display panels for the new 14” and 16” redesigned MacBook Pros after difficulty with the circuit boards and adhesives required, but has now increased their yield rates to over 95%. For me this again points to a release sooner rather than later, with the M1 MacBooks entering production around 5-6 weeks ahead of delivery, with 5 weeks from now being a day after WWDC. Add a week on to that for the typical shipping dates and things are lining up nicely. Just as a quick recap and an excuse to show off the awesome work of Apple Tomorrow, the new MacBook Pros are expected to arrive in 14.1” and 16” sizes, with a redesigned chassis featuring flat sides and faces, expanded IO including multiple thunderbolt and USB-4 ports, SD Card reader, HDMI and the return of MagSafe to the Mac. Both are expected to have active cooling, no more Touch Bar and be powered by the more powerful M1X SOC, which doubles the firestorm performance core count to 8 and GPU Cores to 16. I’m fairly confident that M1X larger iMacs are also ready to ship, because it looks like the MacBook Pro delay has been caused by the displays, and I’d guess that the iMac will actually get a current generation LCD display, with MiniLED being reserved for a potential Pro model down the line. Apple could also introduce a standalone version of this display as a consumer alternative to the Pro Display XDR.

#iCaveAnswers do you think that Apple keeping the App Store as the only way to get apps on the iPad will hinder the iPad Pro becoming more “Pro”?

The problem with MBPs having M1X instead of M2X is that their single core performance would suffer compared to M2. Why release the updated MBPs four months early with sucky single core performance and have updated Airs and low end MBPs in four months with screaming M2s? Browsers and UI responsiveness leverage single core performance not multicore. Why not just have a massive release in the fall just like always? #iCaveAnswers

#icaveanswers How long will Roseta 2 work for? when will Apple stop Roseta 2 support? will my intel mac apps eventually no longer run on my M1 Mac?

#icaveanswers Have you heard anything recently about the previously rumored Apple Silicon discrete graphic card (code name Lifuka)?
