20211110 Why I am returning the Google Pixel 6

A very sad day because I so wanted the Pixel 6 to be my daily Smartphone of choice.

But after 2 weeks of ownership I find it just inferior to what I thought was to be my ‘old’ smartphone: the Google Pixel 4. Pixel 4 is about to come out of retirement.

In 2021 the competition in the Smartphone industry is intense. There is a lot to play for I suppose, most of us need to have a Smartphone. Without it some things are just not possible there days. I mention Banking applications and 2FA as just two examples.

So vendors know that we have to choose one of them. But with the Pixel 6 (not the Pro) I found a large and heavy smartphone with a huge camera bump.

It has a sluggish fingerprint reader and is nowhere as convenient as any phone with secure Biometric Face recognition cue Google Pixel 4 or any current Apple iPhone (except SE).

As an early adopter had I kept the phone I would be entitled to a 300 GBP+ pair of BOSE headphones, but I am still choosing to return the phone. That is how disappointing it is to me. It’s basically not worth the 599 – 300 i.e. 299 GBP price tag (to me).

Dear Google, please think about bringing back FaceID and launching something like the Google Pixel 6 mini. Then you would have the absolutely ideal smartphone.

Counterpoint
Is the Pixel 6 all bad? Of course not.

If you feel inclined to spend 600 GBP or thereabouts on a Smartphone then it is up there with the competition (fingerprint reader excluded).

The best features include

+ Google Camera (NB:Photographs not noticeably better than Pixel 4)
+ Magic Eraser
+ Uncanny speedy dictation speech to text, best of any phone I’ve ever used
+ Offline muti language translation ability (not available on Pixel 4, but only because Google did not port it)
+ 5G capable (IMHO though, who needs or can benefit from greater than 50MB/sec Internet speeds on a smartphone, really nobody)
+ 90Hz display (also avail on Pixel 4 and to me not a useful feature)
+ Android 12 (also avail on Pixel 4)
+ Timely security updates (also available on Pixel 4)
