Tesla has been long promising the advantages and improvements that will be coming with their next generation batteries, the 4680 cells. These new cells are anticipated to debut at Giga Austin when the facility goes online.
That said, we have yet to see the batteries in the Tesla Model Y yet and still do not know what the specs with these new cells will be. Of course the Cybertruck will also be utilizing these new 4680 cells and will need to be at volume production in order to start making the Cybertruck.
Having seen Giga Austin recently in person, I am not convinced that production is imminent, but I do see production starting in about a month. There is still much work to be done to get Giga Austin online and producing Tesla Model Y’s in volume.
The biggest question today is will the Tesla Model Y from Giga Austin come immediately with 4680 cells? Just this week, we saw 9 brand new Tesla Model Y’s in the parking lot that appear to have been produced at Giga Austin. Even so, it is unclear what batteries may be in these cars, and how much of the production was done on site.
I think it is clear to see that Tesla has begun production trials at Giga Austin with the Model Y, and this is a good sign that production equipment may be getting fine tuned for ultimate volume production to come very soon.
