If you’re planning a new system now, be aware that AMD’s hotly-anticipated Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 arrives on September 26, while Intel’s 13th-Gen Raptor Lake retort arrives in October. As such, if you’re not in a hurry.
We recently reviewed AMD’s lowest-end chips, the $99 Ryzen 3 4100 and the $125 Ryzen 5 4500. Unfortunately, these chips come with the dated Zen 2 architecture, so they certainly don’t live up to their price tags. The Ryzen 3 4100 doesn’t make sense for any build — the $99 Core i3-12100F is a better CPU for gaming and every other category. Meanwhile, the Ryzen 5 4500’s one strength, performance in multi-threaded work, is overshadowed by the fact that you can buy Zen 3 models for just a few dollars more. That means the $99 Core i3-12100F and the $122 Core i3-12100 remain the budget CPU champions.
