I have the Google Pixel 6 right here and as you can see the device has been rooted with the latest version of Magisk. Generally speaking, it is considered more difficult to install an OTA update on a smartphone or tablet that has system files which have been modified.

There’s usually always a reliable method of doing so, but it just isn’t as simple as tapping an install button and then waiting for the device to reboot.

So in today’s video, I’ll be showing you how I install OTA updates on the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro even though your device already has Magisk installed for root access. Not only that, but this method will not erase any of your user data, nor will it require you to manually flash the Magisk binaries via Fastboot.

Right here I have the base model of the Pixel 6 and it currently has the January security update installed on it. Google has just released the February OTA update so I can show you how I update this device today using the February security update as an example.

Whether you have received the OTA update notification or just know that an update is waiting for you, the first thing we’ll need to do is visit the software updates page on the smartphone. This is tucked away in the Settings app and from here we just need to manually check if an update is available.

When we see one can be downloaded, ignore the update at first so that we can go into the Magisk application and undo the modifications we made with it. If you’re just using Magisk and systemless root changes then we just have to use the restore feature built into the app.

Once Magisk has been uninstalled, let’s go back into the Settings app and begin installing that update.

Now we wait for the device to download the update, install it to the inactive partition slot, and then optimize the apps. Remember, the optimization part is going to be long so be patient and wait for the Google Pixel 6 Pro to do the work.

When the update is complete, be sure that we refuse that reboot button that is offered on the screen. Instead, we need to open up the Magisk app so we can install the Magisk binaries to that inactive slot as well.

This “install to inactive slot” is a feature built into Magisk for certain devices and thankfully it’s available on these new Pixel smartphones from Google.

Once Magisk finishes things up, we’re offered a new reboot options and this is the one that we tap. The reboot process will be like normal as we boot back into the Android OS and notice that all of our apps, games, photos and videos are all there.

Not only that, but we can check and make sure Magisk is still installed properly and that we have root access as well.

So that wraps up this video on how to install a new OTA update on the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro while rooted and while keeping and maintaining root access as well.
