With a 3D effect: new “portraits” face available for Apple Watch

Apple watch portraits dial logoThose who like to get their own photos as a dial on the Apple Watch and often snap the pictures in portrait mode on the iPhone can look forward to the new “portraits” dial in watchOS 8. Because this does not simply rebuild the respective portrait shot into a watch face, but rather embeds the photo in the view with a handsome overlay effect. In the following we will show you what it looks like and how you can use the new “portraits” dial on your Apple Watch.

requirements

In order to be able to use the new “portraits” dial on the Apple Watch, the latest watchOS 8 update must be installed on your Apple Watch Series 4 or later. If you have not already updated your Apple Watch to the latest software version, we will show you how it works in our article Performing an Apple Watch Update. You also need an iPhone with which you can take portraits, i.e. an iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone X or newer.

Use the “portraits” dial on the Apple Watch

What is special about the new “portrait” dial is the overlay effect, which is created by placing the time between the object in the foreground and the blurred background. As a result, the dial looks almost three-dimensional and the impression arises as if the central object could jump out of the display. The so-called parallax effect, which causes the image to move when the wrist is rotated, also contributes to this.

To use the “portraits” dial, proceed as follows:

First open the watch app on your iPhone and go to “watch faces” below. Then tap on “Portraits” at the top and click on “Select photos”.

Then select one or more photos with a tap of your finger (up to 24 photos are possible) that you would like to use as a portrait watch face and click on “Add” in the top right corner. If you select several pictures here, you will be shown a different photo every time you raise your hand or tap on the display.

You now have the option under “Style” to choose between three different fonts for the time display and to add a maximum of two complications to the dial. After you have set everything, tap on “Add” at the top and the new portrait watch face should be displayed immediately on your Apple Watch.
