Government requests distribution of rental terminals to Para athletes as a measure against the Beijing Olympics app

Chief Cabinet Secretary's interview

On February 8, the Japanese government announced that it would thoroughly distribute rental terminals to Paralympic athletes scheduled to participate as an information security measure for the official Beijing Olympics app.

Distribute terminals to Paralympic athletes

On February 8, the Japan Sports Agency announced that there are concerns that it could cause unauthorized access to the official app that athletes are obliged to use at the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics.

The Japan Sports Agency has announced that it has requested the Japan Paralympic Committee (JPC) to thoroughly distribute rental terminals to athletes participating in the Paralympics in order to ensure the information security of the Japanese athletes.

While we encouraged Olympic athletes to use the app on non-individual smartphones, the government and the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) have not led the distribution of rental terminals.

Thoroughly delete apps on airplanes

At the regular press conference on February 9, Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno made sure that the Olympic athletes who were already participating in the tournament would delete the app on the plane when they returned to Japan, and after returning to Japan, they agreed. I mentioned above that an expert will inspect your smartphone.

As of February 3, I deleted the app after returning to Japan and called on the Olympic Committee to consult with me if there were any suspicious points.

In response to a question from a TBS TV reporter, “What do you think about not lending a rental terminal to the Olympic team?”, Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno replied that he should contact the Japan Sports Agency for details.

It has been pointed out that the official app of the Beijing Olympics contains vulnerabilities that lead to information leakage and that it has a censorship function. I advised not to bring it in.
