China’s smartphone market remains sluggish, with shipments in the second quarter of 2022 (April-June) falling to less than half of its peak.
Among the top manufacturers, only HONOR and Apple are increasing their market share year-on-year.
China’s smartphone shipments have fallen to less than half of their peak
According to research firm Counterpoint, shipments in the Chinese smartphone market in the second quarter of 2022 fell to less than half of its peak in the fourth quarter of 2016 (October-December).
Shipments were lower than this, dating back to the fourth quarter of 2012, when the iPhone 5 was launched.
In addition, shipments during the same period were 12.6% lower than in the first quarter of 2020 (January-March), which was hit by a severe pandemic.
The reasons for the slump in the smartphone market are low consumer sentiment and the fact that the penetration rate of smartphones in China has already risen to some extent.
In addition, it is considered difficult to improve the situation in the second half of 2022 because new innovation cannot be expected.
Among the top manufacturers, only HONOR and Apple will increase their market share
By manufacturer, vivo remained at the top, but its market share dropped 1.3 percentage points year-on-year.
On the other hand, HONOR, which is in second place, is the only top manufacturer to increase shipments and more than double its market share.
HONOR has greatly increased its presence by increasing offline sales and covering smaller cities that are less likely to be locked down.
Apple is increasing its market share, although shipments fell year-on-year, as the iPhone 13 series remains strong.
In the future, OPPO and vivo are trying to break into the premium segment dominated by Apple with foldable smartphones.
It is expected that at least four to five new foldable smartphones will be launched in the second half of 2022.
