Apple warns: Some iPhone users have been targeted by spyware

Security vulnerabilities fixed in iOS 17.4

Apple is issuing a warning to some users about discovered spyware-for-hire that may be attacking iPhones. Potential victims have received an email from Apple describing how the attack could remotely compromise their iPhones. Users appear to be affected globally, with Reuters reporting that Apple is sending notifications to India and 91 other countries.

This isn’t the first time Apple has made such an informative move toward users. Back in 2021, Apple reported the discovery of new attacks. This type of attack is believed to be supported by some countries because the high development cost and complexity of this type of attack are beyond the reach of amateurs. Furthermore, these attacks often target politicians, diplomats, or journalists.

In the latter case, it appears the attack was aimed at installing malware on users’ devices in order to spy on their data and personal files.

However, and why we always recommend keeping iOS security updates up to date (which can already be separated from mere full iOS updates), Apple is constantly working to fix operating system vulnerabilities and protect iPhone users against these types of attacks. On the other hand, users themselves can also protect themselves by placing their devices inside. Isolation mode thereby protects yourself from these attacks by disabling critical device functionality to allow the attack to succeed.
