Apple announced last month that it will provide a new Web Distribution service for developers in the European Union. With the iOS 17.5 Beta 2 update released today, this distribution model is officially launched.
According to the Digital Market Act (DMA) regulations, developers can distribute their applications directly through their websites in addition to the App Store and third-party application malls. This is the third distribution method available to EU developers.

Now available in iOS 17.5 Beta 2 and App Store Connect, Website Distribution allows authorized developers to distribute iOS apps to European Union (EU) users directly through their websites.
If developers meet specific requirements designed to help protect users and the integrity of the platform, Apple will provide them with access to API interfaces that allow them to distribute apps over the network, integrate with system features, and back up and restore users’ apps.
For developers
1. Select new App Store Business Terms
Developers must choose the new App Store business terms, which means that if the application downloads through web distribution exceed 1 million times in the past 12 months, then each new download will need to pay a “core technology fee” of 0.50 euros. “.
2. Comply with Apple guidelines
Apps can only be installed through the website domain registered by the developer in App Store Connect. Apple will also provide developers with a large number of APIs for integrating system functions.
For users
When users first download an app from a developer’s website, they’ll see a series of on-screen prompts explaining what it means to give the developer the ability to install apps from their website.
After authenticating with Face ID and agreeing to give the developer permission to install the app, users will go through a three-step installation process for the app itself.
Apple’s notarization system means users will see clear information about the app and its purpose, including things like the app name, developer name, app description, screenshots and system age rating.
It’s worth noting that users only need to grant permission to install apps once to each developer. For example, Meta has launched a webpage distribution function in the European Union. The first time a user downloads a Meta application (such as Facebook), the user’s authorization is required; and if subsequent users want to continue to install other applications from Meta (such as Instagram) There is no need to authorize again, and users can install it according to the regular application installation steps.
