Chinese vendor Xiaomi ranked third in the global smartphone market share for the first time in the third quarter of 2020 (July-September). It’s the first time in 10 years that Apple has missed the top three market shares.

Apple shipments down 7%

According to research firms Canalys, IDC, and Counterpoint Research, Apple’s revenue for the July-September period of 2020 was down 29% year-on-year.

In the quarter, Apple’s smartphone shipments fell 7% year-on-year to 41.7 million units, while Xiaomi shipments increased 46% year-on-year to 46.2 million in the third quarter of 2020. It recorded a stand and overtook Apple in terms of share, becoming the third largest share in the world.

The numbers are slightly different for each research firm, with Canalys expecting Apple shipments to decline 1% and Xiaomi shipments to increase 45% in the third quarter of 2020. According to IDC, Apple shipments fell by more than 10% and Xiaomi shipments increased by 42% in the quarter.

Xiaomi fills the hole in Huawei

Due to the delay in the launch of the first 5G-enabled iPhone until mid-October, the overall smartphone market for the July-September period of 2020 shrank by 4%.

Huawei’s decline in overseas markets due to US sanctions seems to be largely related to the background of Xiaomi’s breakthrough.

“Xiaomi is eager to fill the hole in Huawei,” said Mo Jia, an analyst at Canalys. “There is a balance in the third quarter of 2020. Xiaomi shipments increased by 14.5 million units, while Huawei shipments decreased by 15.1 million units. In major markets Europe, Huawei Shipments fell 25%, while Xiaomi shipments increased 88%. “

“Xiaomi took the risk of setting the largest production target ever, but succeeded in mass-selling many low-priced devices such as the Redmi 9 series, and it was rewarded.”
