IPad Pro with OLED announced in the second half of 2021 ~ Samsung and LG are developing

iPad Pro 11 and 12.9

THE ELEC, a media familiar with the Korean electronic component industry, is developing an organic EL (OLED) display panel for the iPad Pro by Samsung Display and LG Display, and the new iPad Pro equipped with it is in the second half of 2021 (July to 12). It is reported that it may be announced in (Monday).

Are you developing a new OLED display panel with a longer life?

According to THE ELEC, Samsung Display and LG Display are developing improved OLED display panels for tablets, which tend to have longer screen lighting times than smartphones. This panel seems to have a long life by stacking two or three light emitting layers.

Tablets are often used longer than smartphones, and blue OLEDs can cause burn-in if there is only one light emitting layer, THE ELEC explains.

Will it be released next to the model equipped with a mini LED backlight?

In adopting the OLED display panel for the iPad Pro, Apple has requested improvements such as longer display life from Samsung Display and LG Display, sources said.

Analyst Minchey Kuo expects the new iPad Pro with mini LED backlight to be announced in the first half of 2021 (January-June).

In THE ELEC, the mini LED backlight is advantageous in terms of improving image quality such as local dimming compared to the edge type with LEDs placed on the side of the display, but in terms of thinning because the backlight is placed directly under the display. It points out that it is disadvantageous.

The media pointed out that whether Apple will install OLED on its tablet depends on the scale of adoption of the display with mini LED backlight, and it seems that the adoption time may be delayed depending on it.
