Apple is expected to launch iPad Pro with mini LED panel in the first half of next year

According to the South Korean media TheElec report, Apple is preparing to use OLED screens in the iPad Pro to be launched next year, and OLED panels from Samsung and LG.

According to reports, Samsung Display and LG Display, which currently provide OLED panels for the iPhone, are currently developing new OLED panels for new tablets, which may be launched in the second half of 2021.

Samsung Display will adopt a new OLED light-emitting layer RGB series structure, stacking two to three light-emitting layers, compared with using only one layer, can extend the life of blue OLED. ET News said last month that LG Display will provide Apple with a mini LED display. Apple will “actively use” this screen technology from the iPad series in early 2021, and then move to the MacBook and iMac series.

TheElec did say that the adoption of iPad Pro OLED may be delayed, depending on the “scale of adoption” of mini LED (LCD). Elec confirmed that the mini LED iPad Pro will come out in the first half of 2021, followed by OLED.

If this report is true, it means that Apple’s roadmap is to launch the mini LED iPad Pro as a stepping stone before the OLED iPad Pro.

Korean media also pointed out: Apple is expected to use direct backlight LCD panels on the iPad Pro released in the first half of 2021, which will make the panels thicker. However, the use of direct backlighting can achieve light emission by selectively turning on and off the LED, which will allow Apple to adopt a local dimming strategy to improve contrast.
