On November 27, MMD Research Institute announced the results of the “November 2020 Survey on Communication Service Charges and Capacity” conducted for smartphone users. You can compare the monthly charges and usage data traffic of major carriers and MVNOs.
Investigate monthly charges and data volume of 14,639 smartphone users
The “November 2020 Survey on Communication Service Charges and Capacity” was conducted from October 16 to 19, 2020, targeting 15,000 men and women aged 15 to 69 years nationwide who are using smartphones. However, the responses of 14,639 people, excluding Rakuten Mobile (Rakuten UN-LIMIT) users who provide free communication charges, are totaled.
The breakdown of the respondents is as follows.
- 3 major carriers: 10,793 (72.0%)
- Cheap SIM (sub-brand + MVNO): 3,846 people (25.6%)
- MVNO: 2,113 (14.1%)
81.3% of users know the monthly fee
81.3% of the respondents knew the amount of the monthly charge (communication charge + terminal price) paid to the communication company that has a communication contract for smartphones.
Looking at the average monthly charge by service, the three major carriers were 8,312 yen, the cheap SIM users were 4,424 yen, and the MVNO users were 3,771 yen.
Communication charges of the three major carriers are most often between 4,000 yen and less than 5,000 yen.

Of the 6,478 people who answered that they were paying the terminal price to the telecommunications company, 77.3% knew the monthly installment amount of the terminal price they were paying.

When asked about the monthly data capacity plan of the smartphones they are currently using, 61.4% of the respondents answered “small capacity (1GB or less to less than 7GB)”, accounting for more than 60%.
“Medium capacity (7GB to less than 20GB)” was 7.7%, and “Large capacity (20GB to unlimited)” was 16.1%.

The monthly data capacity plans of major 3 carrier users are 54.4% for “small capacity (1GB or less to less than 7GB)”, 7.2% for “medium capacity (7GB to less than 20GB)”, and “large capacity (20GB to unlimited)”. It was 20.9%.
