Reset AirTag & restore factory settings

Reset AirTags logoYou want to reset your AirTag because you want to sell, give away, lend or link the Apple Tracker to a new Apple ID? This is not a problem, as there are two simple ways you can use if you want to restore the factory settings.

Reset AirTag to factory settings

If you set up an AirTag on your iPhone, it will always be linked to your Apple ID. As a result, the Bluetooth tracker cannot easily be paired with another Apple ID, for example if you want to lend it, sell it or give it away. To delete the link between the AirTag and your Apple ID, you have to reset the Apple tracker to factory settings. Proceed as follows:

Important: Make sure that Bluetooth is active on your iPhone and that the AirTag is within range. Otherwise the AirTag will be separated from your Apple ID, but cannot be connected to another Apple ID.

  1. Now open the Where is? App on your iPhone.
  2. Go to “Objects” below and tap the respective AirTag in the list.
  3. Swipe the menu card upwards and click on “Remove object” at the bottom.
  4. Confirm the whole thing again with a tap on “Remove”.

The AirTag is now back in its original state and can be linked to a new Apple ID.

Reset the AirTag manually

If the AirTag cannot be re-paired – for example because the tracker was not within Bluetooth range during deletion or Bluetooth was not activated at all – you can also reset the AirTag manually. Proceed as follows:

  1. Press on the stainless steel cover on the AirTag and turn it counterclockwise until it pops open.
  2. Take out the battery.
  3. Reinstall the battery.
  4. Press on the battery until you hear a beep.
  5. Repeat removing and inserting the battery four more times. If you have heard the tone five times in total, you are done.
  6. Now put the cover on so that the three tabs of the lid are over the slots of the AiTag.
  7. Push the cover down until you hear a sound.
  8. Turn the cover clockwise until you can no longer go any further.
