The battery of the iPhone X used by my family suddenly expanded one day, and the organic EL (OLED) display floated and became a bow, so I asked Apple to repair it.
We will tell you the repair fee and the number of days.
First iPhone battery expansion experience
I’ve used more than a dozen iPhones since the iPhone 4, but I haven’t encountered battery swelling.
When I confirmed that my family using iPhone X, which I used before, said that the display was floating, there was a case of battery expansion as reported by other users on the Web. It was confirmed, so I contacted Apple Support.
The state of the battery was 90% of the maximum capacity, and there was no particular deterioration.
Battery inflated part 1
The battery of the iPhone X has expanded, and only the right side of the OLED display panel is greatly floating.
Since both ends of the OLED display panel are fixed, only the center is pushed up to form a bow.
Battery inflated part 2
Since the OLED display panel is floating, it is not water resistant at all.
According to my family, I was in this state after a few hours, so it didn’t gradually come to light over the next few days.
Call Apple Support
We decided it was dangerous to use the battery with it inflated, so we left it uncharged and immediately called Apple Support for repairs.
As a result, I got the following response from support.
- From the symptomatology, it seems that the battery is swelling
- Answer after taking care of the definitive diagnosis
- If a failure other than battery expansion is confirmed, an additional repair fee will be charged separately.
- If additional repair fee is incurred, please contact us in advance before repair
- At that stage, it is necessary to decide whether to repair or return without repair.
- Register your credit card for repair payment from the link sent by email
- Make a backup before sending it for repair
- Desired date and time for pick-up date of repaired goods
- Confirmation of receipt of repair status by SMS
The author had Yamato Transport pick up the goods in the evening of the next day, which is the shortest pick-up day.
Repair fee and repair days
It arrived at the Apple Repair Center the day after it was shipped, was repaired the same day, and was returned the next day.
The repair time was 3 days from collection to receipt.
The repair fee was 8,140 yen including tax as a battery replacement fee for iPhone X.
Repaired iPhone X Part 1
The replacement of the inflated battery eliminated the floating of the OLED display panel.
Repaired iPhone X Part 2
The bowed OLED display panel hasn’t been replaced, but Apple’s diagnostics may have determined it to be okay.
Repaired iPhone X Part 3
After the repair, the main body has a transparent film that protects the OLED display panel and the back panel.
Summary
I experienced the first battery expansion and repaired it at Apple.
The repair fee was 8,140 yen including tax, and the total number of days left for repair was 3 days.
The repair was only to replace the inflated battery, leaving the main unit and OLED display panel intact.
If you search on the Web, you can see multiple cases where the main body was replaced due to the battery expansion repair of the iPhone.
I’m not sure if it depends on the condition of the repaired item or if Apple’s repair policy has changed, but in my case only the necessary parts were replaced.
