Cincinnati’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials inspected large cargo from China and reportedly found a large number of counterfeit AirPods that violated Apple’s trademark and copyright codes.

The counterfeit product may contain non-standard materials or defective parts.

Apple has registered the AirPods trademark, but it doesn’t necessarily have to carry the word “Apple” or the logo to infringe the trademark. In this case, it was determined that the shape and design of the earphones reproduced Apple’s protected configuration.

Each of the three large cargoes from China was loaded with 12,000 fake AirPods, for a total of 36,000. The declared price of each package was $ 5,280 (about 576,700 yen), but if it were sold at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of AirPods, it would be $ 7.16 million (about 780 million yen).

Richard Gillespie, director of the Cincinnati Port Authority, said, “Counterfeit products are seemingly indistinguishable from the real thing, but there is a high possibility that non-standard materials and defective parts are used, resulting in a heavy burden on consumers. It tends to be. ” “Purchasing from a trusted company can prevent potential human rights abuses and economic damage.”

Lost money to buy cheap goods?

According to CBP, there are several ways to protect yourself from buying fake goods. One is to buy from an authorized brand retailer, read all other labels, and check the manufacturer’s database for serial numbers and other authentication methods.

“Supporting illegal businesses is far more costly than the real thing,” he said, concluding his blog post.
