Apple CEO Tim Cook is sued by Epic Games, which runs the popular third-person shooter Fortnite, for alleged antitrust violations “The App Store payment system is necessary for security and fees,” he said.

Convenience and security are compromised without the App Store

Apple CEO Cook, who stood on the testimony stand at the Epic Games trial, traveled that the App Store not only helps ensure user security, but is also convenient in terms of software distribution. If there wasn’t an App Store, each app would have to charge for it in its own way, which would inevitably add complexity, he said.

Users will need to put their credit card information in each of the different apps. This is a convenience issue, but it will also raise fraud issues.

Difficult to collect fees

Cook said in court testimony that if a large number of apps are paid, each software company will have to collect fees.

You’ll have to think of another way to collect fees (without going through the App Store). You’ll have to figure out how to track what the deal is going on, and you’ll be chasing after invoicing the developers. These seem like unnecessary processes.

Jury Rogers of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California acknowledged that the trial, which lasted about three weeks, was almost over, and the jury system is expected to draw the conclusion of the trial by August 13.
