Apple, Mozilla, Google, Microsoft promote the establishment of WECG community: committed to browser plug-in standardization

Apple Insider reported that the newly established WebExtensions community will try to create a common framework for future Web extensions and invite developers to actively participate in it. Take Apple Safari as an example. The Cupertino technology giant has adopted a new Web extension API on the macOS Big Sur platform, laying the foundation for compatibility with plug-ins developed for other browsers. However, the development of this standardized plug-in is still in its early stages.

It is reported that the current members of the WebExtensions Community Group (hereinafter referred to as WECG) are mainly composed of major browser developers (Apple, Mozilla, Microsoft, etc.). Early leaders include Timothy Hatcher from Apple and Simeon from Google Vincent.

The WECG community has set two goals:

● First of all, in order to simplify the development process of extension programs, WECG needs to introduce a consistent model, as well as common core functions, application programming interfaces (APIs), and permissions.

● Secondly, WECG will roughly outline a set of architectures that can enhance performance, are safer and more stable.

Even so, WECG still does not want to make careful planning or stifle innovation for the Web expansion platform, because each browser will continue to operate independently in accordance with its own policies.

Developers and browser vendors who are interested in contributing to the WECG team can move to the W3C official website for details.

In addition, WECG has established a special GitHub resource repository (portal), which contains the details of the community charter and related work.
