Apple maintains its leading position in the 5G smartphone market in the first quarter of this year

Despite the seasonal decline after the holiday quarter, Apple easily maintained its position as the leader in the 5G smartphone market in the first quarter of this year.

All iPhone 12 releases and sales were in the last quarter of last year. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro went on sale in October, while iPhone 12 mini and Pro Max went on sale in November.

Apple maintains its leading position in the 5G smartphone market in the first quarter of this year

Although new models continued to sell well this year, two factors did see Apple’s share of the 5G smartphone market declined in the first quarter.

First, the seasonal decline and holiday sales after launch. Strategy Analytics reported that from 52.2 million units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2020 to 40.4 million units in the first quarter of this year, a quarter-on-quarter decline of 23%.

Second, the launch of new competitive Android models. According to market intelligence companies, all four next-largest 5G smartphone brands have seen significant growth in their shipments during the same period.

In the first quarter of 2021, Samsung is the world’s fastest-growing supplier of 5G smartphones, with shipments jumping 79% month-on-month to 17 million units. Samsung’s new 5G models such as the Galaxy S21 5G, S21 ultra 5G and S21+ 5G have performed well in South Korea, North America and parts of Europe.

Vivo is the second fastest-growing 5G smartphone supplier in the first quarter of 2021. Driven by its iQOO U3 5G and U7 5G smartphones, shipments soared 62% month-on-month to 19 million units. Vivo’s 5G smartphone bases are in China and Europe.

OPPO increased by 55% month-on-month, and Xiaomi increased by 41% month-on-month, both due to solid domestic sales in China.

At the same time, after the blowout growth in the fourth quarter of 2020, Apple’s quarterly decline was 23%, and the new 5G iPhone was crazy welcome as a gift during the holiday season.

However, no one challenged Apple’s position as the leader in the 5G smartphone market, and the company eventually gained a 29.8% market share-nearly twice that of Oppo (15.8%), which ranked second.
