The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that it will file a lawsuit to prevent NVIDIA from acquiring Arm.

The reason is that it can hinder legitimate competition.

Concerned that NVIDIA’s rivals will be unduly weakened

In a statement, FTC points out that NVIDIA’s acquisition of Arm could hinder legitimate competition and innovation.

As Arm’s CPU core technology is used in various industries, including smartphones, the acquisition of NVIDIA, which has a strong stake, threatens neutral and open licensing.

NVIDIA is known as a major GPU, but it develops chips and systems that utilize Arm’s CPU cores, such as the DRIVE series for in-vehicle use and the Jetson series for edge AI systems.

In the past, we provided the Tegra series of system-on-chip (SoC) for smartphones and tablets.

NVIDIA promises to maintain an open licensing model

NVIDIA, on the other hand, promises to maintain an open licensing model after the acquisition.

It will also continue to invest in the development of Arm’s CPU core technology, accelerating its roadmap, driving competition and expanding Arm’s ecosystem.

However, there is a dark cloud ahead of NVIDIA’s acquisition of Arm, with the UK government also launching a 24-week additional investigation into the acquisition, citing concerns about national security and competition.

There is also a movement to abandon the Arm architecture and adopt the RISC-V architecture, mainly from Chinese companies, including Apple.
