According to foreign media MacRumors, Stan Ng, Apple’s vice president of product marketing, and Evans Hankey, vice president of industrial design, accepted an interview with HYPEBEAST and discussed the design concept of Apple Watch straps.
Apple Watch is inconspicuous in most cases, and it is difficult for people to notice the style of the strap worn by others at first glance. With Apple’s first launch of the Apple Watch in 2014, the company has maintained a good partnership with Nike and Hermes to make the strap more fashionable, while exploring the application of multiple materials on the strap.
Apple now offers a variety of materials for Apple Watch straps, combined with different dial styles, there are thousands of combinations, which is difficult to achieve in traditional watches. Although Apple has increased the watch size to 41mm and 45mm in Apple Watch Series 7, the strap is still compatible with the previous 40mm and 44mm watches respectively.
Hankey said that the backward compatibility of watch straps is the first issue to be considered when designing a product. Although the strap does not reflect too much technology, the company uses this product to express its love for materials, craftsmanship and production process.
Stan Ng said that the Apple Watch strap itself does not contain any technology, but the design ensures the performance of the watch and ensures that it will not affect the experience of the watch. The Velcro on the Sport Loops, the Milanese Loop and the magnet on the leather strap, as well as the 9 sizes of Solo Loop and woven Solo Loop, can make the watch easily adjusted to the appropriate position to ensure the accuracy of sensor data detection.
At the end of the interview, Apple executives also introduced some of the technologies used in watch straps. The executive also said that although Apple and Hermès are very different in design styles, the two companies are the same in the pursuit of details, craftsmanship and storytelling, so Apple has been exploring this form of cooperation.
