Smartphone communication service usage rate and MVNO usage rate have decreased for the second consecutive year-MMD Research Institute announces

On December 10, MMD Research Institute announced the results of the “December 2021 Communication Service Usage Trend Survey”. Of the smartphone users, the total of the main brands of the four carriers was 71.1%, and the total of the online-only plans was 6.8%. The MVNO utilization rate has decreased for the second consecutive year, falling below 10%.

Survey of 40,000 people nationwide

The MMD Research Institute’s “December 2021 Communication Service Usage Trend Survey” was conducted on the Internet from November 15th to 17th, 2021 for men and women aged 18 to 69 years nationwide, and 40,000. We have received valid answers from people. Weightback tabulation is performed to match the collected samples to the population composition ratio.

 

The main usage rate of the online plan is 6.8%

In the survey, 36,006 people (90.0% of the total) who answered that they are using smartphones with communication contracts are asked about the main communication service.
 
The percentages of the four carriers are as follows, for a total of 71.1%. The total of the three major carriers (NTT DoCoMo, au, Softbank) is 63.3%.

  • NTT DoCoMo: 30.9%
  • au: 19.9%
  • Softbank: 12.5%
  • Rakuten Mobile (Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI): 7.8%

 
The percentage of users of the online-only plan that started in the spring of 2021 is as follows, and the total of the three services is 6.8%.

  • ahamo: 4.3%
  • povo: 1.8%
  • LINEMO: 0.7%

 
The carrier sub-brand is 12.8% in total for the two services.

  • Y! Mobile: 8.3%
  • UQ mobile: 4.5%

 
The usage rate of the four carriers, including the main brand, online-only plan, and sub-brand, was 90.7%, and the MVNO was 9.3%.

 

Rakuten and MVNO stand out on sub-use lines

Of the services used by 3,521 people (9.8% of smartphone users) who answered that they are sub-using smartphones, the main brands of the four carriers totaled 66.4%, the online-only plans totaled 10.0%, and the sub-brands totaled. 8.2% and MVNO were 15.3%.
 
Compared to the main use, Rakuten Mobile (Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI) is 19.0% and MVNO is 15.3%.
 

 

Compared to August: Online-only plan, sub-brands increased slightly

Comparing the usage rate of each service with the survey results in August 2021, there is a tendency for the main brands to decrease slightly and the online-only plans and sub-brands to increase slightly in the three major carriers.
 

 

MVNO utilization rate declined for the second consecutive year

As for the MVNO utilization rate since October 2014, the utilization rate, which had been increasing until September 2019, started to decrease in November 2020.
 
In November 2021, it was 9.3%, down 3.0 points from the previous year.
 

 
The declining trend of MVNO utilization is also clear from the survey results of MM Research Institute.

Most of the online plans and sub-brands are from the same series

When we asked 9,857 people who mainly use the online-only plan, sub-brand, Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI, which telecommunications company they were using before the service they are currently using, among the services of the same telecommunications company. You can see that there are many users who have switched.
 
The most common ones are as follows.

  • ahamo (n = 1,437): NTT DoCoMo 75.0%
  • povo (n = 597): au 83.7%
  • LINEMO (n = 236): Softbank 63.2%
  •  

  • Y! Mobile (n = 2,705): Softbank 50.1%
  • UQ mobile (n = 1,492): au 53.7%
  •  

  • Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI (n = 2,558): MVNO 51.0%

 

 

Rakuten Mobile ranked 3rd, the transfer destination for 3 carrier users

When asked the respondents who are currently using smartphones and are considering purchasing without owning a smartphone, they asked about the status of considering switching to another telecommunications company or changing plans at the same telecommunications company. 31.3% of the respondents answered “Yes.”
 

 
The table below summarizes the transfer destinations that are being considered for 5,345 people who are using NTT DoCoMo, au, and Softbank and are considering plan changes or transfers.
 

 
NTT DoCoMo users (n = 2,306) were NTT DoCoMo and ahamo, au users (n = 1,847) were au and UQ mobile, and SoftBank users (n = 1,192) were Y! Mobile and Softbank. .. There is a high tendency to transfer between services of the same carrier.
 
Rakuten Mobile (Rakuten UN-LIMIT VI) is ranked 3rd in all three carriers.
