Taiwan Media Economic Daily reported that UMC will supply the driver IC for Samsung’s organic EL (OLED) display installed in the iPhone 14 series.
DDI was worried about lack of supply
According to the Economic Daily, UMC and Samsung will jointly develop a 22nm high voltage process to manufacture display driver ICs (DDIs).
UMC will be in charge of manufacturing the DDI, and the prototype is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2022 (January to March) at the earliest.
Samsung also manufactures DDI for OLED in-house, but there was concern about lack of production capacity.
UMC’s 22nm high-voltage process is expected to increase production of DDI for Samsung after trial production verification.
Samsung is rumored to have the largest supply of OLED displays for the iPhone 14 series
Samsung is expected to continue to supply Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) organic EL (OLED) displays for the iPhone 14 series.
