Apple Watch may display incorrect altitude readings in unusual weather conditions

Foreign media pointed out that Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE may give incorrect altitude readings under abnormal weather conditions. Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE use a new generation of always-on altimeter to provide real-time altitude information. Apple said that its updated altimeter can cross-reference information from GPS and nearby Wi-Fi networks to detect the smallest change in altitude above the ground with an error of 1 foot or less.

However, in Germany, the altitude readings received by a large number of Apple Watch users are very error-prone. Many users reported that although the affected devices worked normally in the past, their altitude was calculated to be 200 to 300 meters too high.

Users on the Apple Germany Support Forum found that a period of low air pressure caused the altimeter of the Apple Watch to give incorrect altitude readings. Although the influence of barometric pressure changes on the barometric altimeter is normal, this problem can usually be dealt with by periodically recalibrating to the current sea level barometric pressure. However, Apple does not allow users to manually prompt the altimeter to recalibrate, because the time interval for the automatic recalibration of the Apple Watch is currently unknown.

Affected users can still receive correct information when tracking exercises such as hiking, because Apple Watch records the height relative to the starting point. Nevertheless, it is unclear why some Apple Watches do not use GPS information to link barometric pressure measurements to location. In this way, Apple Watch can recognize when there is a weather front that has a significant impact on air pressure, and then prompt to recalibrate the altimeter.

Some users report that they still receive disproportionately false readings, while others have found that the only way to prompt the altimeter to recalibrate is to factory reset their Apple Watch and iPhone.
