Sina Digital News reported on the morning of January 14 that Apple today announced the “REJI” project, which aims to solve racism and help eliminate the unfair treatment faced by people of color.

Apple first announced its Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI) in June last year as a countermeasure to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and others. People were killed in protest.

The company said at the time that it would invest $100 million in the plan, and has now revealed several uses of the fund. These include the Propel Center, which is the first global innovation and learning center for the historic black college and university (HBCU); the creation of the Apple Developer Academy to support coding and technical education for students in Detroit; and support for entrepreneurs of color Of venture capital funds.

Foreign media CBS aired an interview with Apple CEO Cook this morning. Cook discussed the REJI project with the host.

When the host asked what made Cook pay attention to “racism”, Cook, who was born in 1960, mentioned the examples he saw in his childhood:

“People who were born in the 60s and 70s and grew up in that era have witnessed (the racism issue) with their own eyes. When I was five years old, John Lewis was beaten on the Edmund Pettus Bridge When I was eight years old, there was a “Stonewall riots” (Stonewall riots, a series of violent clashes between gays and the police in New York in 1969). These have changed time and changed my life. “

“When you have experienced such things or look back at these events, and look at what is happening today, you will still see structural racism and systemic racism. We should do something about it, Otherwise it will not disappear.”

In addition, Cook also mentioned last week Apple’s decision to remove the right-wing social networking software Parler from the App Store. Cook explained, “Parler’s review has some problems. There are some examples of incitement to violence. They need to strengthen the review. We hope that they will fix this problem and return to the App Store. We temporarily removed it, but it was not permanent. Prohibited.”

In addition to being deleted from the App Store, Parler’s service was also deleted by its hosting company Amazon. Although Parler has since found new hosting, the future of the service is still unclear.
