Qualcomm has announced the latest version of its 800-series series, the flagship model of its system-on-chip (SoC). Named the Snapdragon 870, this SoC is the successor to the company’s last year’s high-end model, the Snapdragon 865+.

CPU performance slightly higher than 865+

The main specifications of Snapdragon 870 are as follows when compared with 865+ and 888.

865+ 870 888
CPU Cortex A77 (@ 3.1GHz) x1, Cortex A77 (@ 2.42GHz) x3, Cortex A55 (@ 1.80GHz) x4 Cortex A77 (@ 3.2GHz) x1, Cortex A77 (@ 2.40GHz) x3, Cortex A55 (@ 1.80GHz) x4 Cortex X1 (@ 2.84GHz) x1, Cortex A78 (@ 2.42GHz) x3, Cortex A55 (@ 1.80GHz) x4
GPU Aderno 650 Aderno 650 Aderno 660 (25% faster than Aderno 650)
DSP (AI processing) Hexagon 698 (15 Tera Operations Per Second (TOPS)) Hexagon 698 (15 TOPS) Hexagon 780 (26 TOPS)
Wifi Wi-Fi 6E Wi-Fi 6 Wi-Fi 6E
Manufacturing process 7 nanometers (nm) 7nm 5nm

If you compare it like this, you can see that the Snapdragon 870 is very similar to the 865+.

The big difference is that the frequency of the high-speed CPU core has been raised from 3.1GHz to 3.2GHz, and Wi-Fi support has been lowered from Wi-Fi 6E to Wi-Fi 6.

Compared to the latest flagship Snapdragon 888, the specs are inferior overall.

Being between the premium flagship and the premium midrange

The Snapdragon 870 is believed to be cheaper than the Snapdragon 888 and will be the product of smartphones that fill the gap between the premium flagship and the premium midrange.

This is the same standing position as last year’s Snapdragon 765G, which was adopted for Google Pixel 5 etc.

The Snapdragon 870 will be available on smartphones from customers such as Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO and Xiaomi.
