In the fourth quarter of 2020 (October-December), Apple won the top share in smartphone shipments by vendor, ahead of Samsung.

Apple announced on the 27th that sales in the fourth quarter of 2020 (first quarter of 2021 in Apple’s own fiscal year) increased by 21% year-on-year to $ 111.4 billion (about 11,597.0 billion yen). It was the highest quarterly sales ever.
Needless to say, we were able to achieve this level of performance because of the strong sales of our mainstay iPhone. iPhone sales were $ 65,597 million, a significant leap of 17.2% year-on-year.
Apple hasn’t disclosed shipments for several years, but according to research firm IDC’s own tabulation, a total of 90.1 million iPhones were shipped in the fourth quarter. This put Apple at the top of the market share in the quarter, ahead of Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei. Apple’s share is 23.4%, followed by Samsung with 19.1% and Xiaomi with 11.2%.
Also, in 2020, Samsung secured the number one position with 266.7 million units shipped, but Apple also shipped 206.1 million units and returned to second place. Huawei was second in 2019, but the company stalled significantly from the second half of 2020 as it was put on the embargo list by the US administration for security reasons.
The smartphone market was temporarily depressed due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), but by the end of 2020, it can be said that the number of shipments decreased by 5.9% from the previous year.
