iOS 14.4.1 update closes security gap – install now!

Settings app logoCompletely surprising and to a certain extent unscheduled – Apple usually distributes iOS updates on Tuesday evening of our time – the iPhone manufacturer has released a small security update with iOS 14.4.1 that is now available for all users to download. The rollout, which differs from the usual update routine, indicates a serious security hole that, according to Apple, has crept into the in-house WebKit software.

iOS 14.4.1 fixes a WebKit bug

As always, Apple is keeping a low profile regarding the exact background for the sudden release of the iOS 14.4.1 security update. On its own support page for security updates, however, the iPhone manufacturer announces that iOS 14.4.1 is taking care of the elimination of a vulnerability that enables the execution of arbitrary code through maliciously designed web content. Apple’s WebKit software, with which the Safari web browser also works, is therefore affected by the security gap. We therefore recommend that you install the update as soon as possible so that you can safely surf the Internet on your iPhone.

However, new functions are not to be expected under iOS 14.4.1. So it is a pure security update with no extras. Most recently, Apple released a regular update with iOS 14.4 with some innovations in tow. However, it should only get really exciting when Apple sends iOS 14.5 into the race in the coming weeks, including new emojis, the ability to unlock the iPhone via Apple Watch and the technical requirements for using Apple’s Tile-like AirTags on the iPhone brings.

As a reminder, you should create an iCloud backup or iTunes backup in advance so that you do not lose any data during the update. As always, you can trigger the update wirelessly on the iPhone in the Settings app under “General” → “Software updates”. With a tap on “Download and install” you start the download.
