iOS 15 adoption rate is 72% lower than in previous years

Sina Digital News on the morning of January 14th, according to relevant data from Apple’s official developer website, the adoption rate of the iOS 15 system this year is lower than in previous years.

Because some devices cannot support the latest version of the system, Apple’s statistics on the adoption rate of its own system will be divided into “device adoption rate in the past four years” and “all device adoption rate”.

By these two statistics, 72% of devices launched since 2018 are using iOS 15, 26% are running iOS 14, and another 2% are running an older version of iOS.

Across all devices, 63% have iOS 15 installed, 30% are running iOS 14, and 7% are legacy software.

Also, broken down by device, iPadOS adoption is even lower: 57% of iPads launched in the past four years run iPadOS 15, 39% run iPadOS 14, and 4% run an older system; the figure for all iPad devices is 49%, 37% and 14%.

Although this adoption rate is already much higher than Android, this year’s system adoption rate is lower than iOS 14 and iPadOS 14. As of December 2020, iOS 14 was installed on 81% of devices released in the first four years. Looking further back, iOS 13 had a 77% adoption rate at the same point in time after launch.

The reason for the drop in adoption has to do with the lack of attractive new features in iOS 15, but also because of the change in Apple’s stance on updates. They no longer force users to install the latest operating system version to get important security updates; in addition, some foreign users believe that Apple’s CSAM (child sexual abuse photos) content scanning may leak privacy, which may also be the reason for the low adoption rate.
