Apple is believed to have struck a deal with a new supplier of telephoto lens components for a periscope camera system for future iPhones,media reported. South Korea’s Jahwa Electronics said it plans to spend 191 billion won ($155 million) to build a factory to produce new optical image stabilization (OIS) components.
Apple visited the new Jahwa facility in the first half of 2021, “likely” as an investment to allow it to supply Apple with OIS components starting next year.
Such OIS elements, which combine shock resistance and autofocus, may be used in the telephoto cameras of the 2023 iPhones. These elements, combined with the periscope camera system, can also add optical zoom.
Rumors of the iPhone getting a periscope lens have been circulating since the beginning of 2020, and well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was the first to mention the possibility, arguing that a periscope lens would be a feature of the iPhone 14 Pro, but now predicts this type of lens Will appear in the iPhone 15 Pro, and another analyst Jeff Pu also made the same prediction.
In a periscope system, light entering the telephoto lens is reflected by a tilted mirror onto the camera’s image sensor, and the change in the direction the light travels allows the telephoto setup in the phone to “fold” longer, allowing the user to Zooming can be done further without any blurring.
