New data on the use of real-time bidding (RTB), an online advertising mechanism, has been released by the Irish Council of Civil Liberties (ICCL), an Irish human rights group. According to the report, online behavior and location information is exposed to the RTB industry 747 times a day per person in the United States.

The biggest data breach in history

The ICCL report begins with the sentence, “RTB (running behind a website or app) is the largest data breach ever recorded.” According to the source, RTB tracks and shares what people are looking at online and where they are, 294 billion times in the United States and 197 billion times in Europe per day.

This means that on average, online behavior and location are shared 747 times a day per person in the United States.

What is the state or country where the most data was leaked?

Colorado was the country with the most data leaks to the RTB industry in the United States, and we found that 987 data were retrieved per person per day. This was followed by Michigan (913 times), Illinois (912 times), and North Carolina (911 times).

Among European countries, the United Kingdom had the highest number of data leaks, 462 times per person per day. This was followed by Poland (431 times), Spain (426 times) and Malta (421 times).

Google is the largest RTB company

The report also states that Google is the largest RTB system, with 1,058 companies in Europe and 4,698 companies in the United States receiving RTB data from Google.

The report also states that Mirosoft is another major player, but ICCL does not seem to be able to determine the usage of RTB data on Facebook and Amazon.
