Bigger & fatter: are we already seeing the new iPhone 14 here?

iPhone 14 Pro Max Mockup LogoThere are still 4 months until the expected release of the new iPhone 14, but the rumors and leaks are picking up speed these days. In a video by the YouTuber Unbox Therapy, we now get a first reliable impression of what we can expect with the iPhone 14 Pro Max – i.e. the large premium version of the upcoming iPhone flagship.

iPhone 14 Pro Max: Without a notch, but with an XXL camera hump

For his preview of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, the YouTuber organized a mockup based on current leaks and rumors. According to its own statements, the non-functional dummy model – i.e. a dummy – comes from a case provider who has created a physical 1:1 copy of the iPhone 14 Pro Max based on virtual CAD files. In a direct comparison with the current iPhone 13 Pro Max, it becomes apparent that the successor is a little thicker (bigger battery?) and feels a bit larger. And the unpopular camera hill has also increased a bit. The latter could be due to the new 48-megapixel camera (via MacRumors) rumored by the famous Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, which is said to replace the previous 12-MP camera system. Of course, this also makes the new Apple phone a little heavier.

According to the mockup, the “notch” – i.e. the recess at the top of the screen reserved for the front camera system – is to give way to a pill-shaped housing for the sensors and a single camera hole (also called “hole-punch-camera”). However, this change should be reserved for the Pro models. The “cheaper” iPhones without a name suffix should keep the “forehead” that many have grown fond of. What is also noticeable: the edges are a bit narrower than on the predecessor, but adjustments to the iOS interface are not to be expected as a result. The fact that the mockup still has a Lightning connector is also not surprising. According to information from Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo, the USB-C input that was recently boiled over in the rumor mill is not expected until 2023, i.e. with the iPhone 15 series.

All in all, the replica does not show much that is new compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max. If that’s actually the case, Apple seems to be doing a model upgrade with the iPhone 14 Pro Max. However, if you have always been bothered by the notch and want to record videos in 8K quality thanks to the 48 MP camera, you should be happy about the upgrade.
