Strong iPhone 13/Pro sales, Apple takes 62% of the global high-end smartphone market in Q1 2022, Huawei drops to 3%

IT House June 24 news, Counterpoint Research data shows that Apple’s iPhone 13 continued to be the world’s best-selling smartphone in April. Now Counterpoint Research has shared a new report showing that Apple captured 62% of the premium smartphone market in Q1 2022.

Research shows that Apple’s market share in the high-end smartphone market in Q1 2022 has reached the highest level since Q1 2017. In addition, despite the 8% year-on-year decline in the global premium smartphone market during the quarter, it still outperformed the overall smartphone market (down 10%).

Apple continued to lead as the market for high-end phones (referring to phones above $400 (about 2,680 yuan)) outperformed the growth of the overall smartphone market for the eighth consecutive quarter. According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s 62% premium market share is driven by the iPhone 13/Pro series, which has been the best-selling series globally since October 2021.

Sales growth in the ultra-premium phone market was driven by Apple and Samsung. The iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro together accounted for more than two-thirds of sales in the ultra-premium price segment, driven by strong growth in the US, China and Western Europe. In the Chinese market, in Q1 2022, sales in the market segment with prices above US$1,000 (about 6,700 yuan) increased by 176% year-on-year. This segment alone accounted for more than one-fifth of the sales value of China’s smartphone market during the quarter. Apple has emerged as the biggest winner after Huawei slumped in the premium phone market. China’s high-end mobile phone market still has potential and will be driven by upgrades, especially users from Huawei’s large customer base.

Samsung is No. 2 in the premium segment, with a delay in the launch of the Galaxy S22 series compared to the Galaxy S21 series launched in 2021, resulting in a decline in the share of premium handsets. According to Counterpoint Research, “Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra combines the best of the S series and Note series.”

As the chart shows, thanks to the iPhone 13 series, Apple’s high-end mobile phone market share jumped from 57% in 2021 Q1 to 62% in 2022 Q1, ranking first; on the other hand, Samsung’s high-end mobile phone market share increased from 2021 18% fell to 16% in 2022, ranking second; Huawei’s high-end mobile phone share also dropped significantly from 9% to 3% in just one year, ranking fifth; OPPO ranked third, with a share of 5%. Xiaomi ranked 4th with a 4% share; vivo ranked 5th with a 3% share.

The current generation of Apple smartphones, the iPhone 13 series brings a smaller notch for the first time since the iPhone X, along with battery and camera improvements. Earlier this year, Apple also introduced new colors for the standard and Pro models to boost sales.
