June iPhone shipments in China up 200% year-on-year

iPhone

Due to the closure of the factory due to the effects of the new coronavirus infection, iPhone shipments in mainland China fell sharply in April and May 2022.

However, in June, the number of shipments increased due to the reaction, and it recorded an increase of more than 200% compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the latest report of China Information and Communication Researcher (CAICT).

Production and logistics in China gradually normalize

According to CAICT, shipments of mobile phones (future phones, smartphones) in mainland China in June 2022 were 28,017,000 units, an increase of 9.2% from the same month of the previous year.

The reason for this increase is that the Taiwan Media Economic Daily reports that the lockdown in eastern China has been lifted and the supply chain and logistics are gradually normalizing.

Recorded increase since December 2021

Of the 28,017,000 units shipped in June, 27,478,000 were smartphones, up 9.1% year-on-year. This is the increase since December 2021.

The number of smartphones shipped for the full year from January to June 2022 was 134 million units, a decrease of 21.7% from the same period of the previous year.

The iPhone contributed to the increase

What is also interesting about the number of smartphones shipped in June is that overseas brand smartphones contributed to the increase.

According to CAICT, shipments of Chinese brand smartphones decreased slightly from the same month of the previous year, while shipments of overseas brand smartphones in June were 3.5 million units, reaching 1.1 million units in June 2021. Compared to that, it has more than tripled.

This is well above the average monthly shipment of 2.3 million units over the last few years.

The Economic Daily states that most of the overseas brand smartphones that brought about this increase are iPhones.

Strong iPhone shipments in mainland China

Analysts have pointed out that iPhone shipments in mainland China have recovered since May 2022. IPhone shipments in May were down 9% year-on-year, but more than doubled in June.

Although supply chain problems due to factory closures in eastern China have not yet been completely resolved, iPhone shipments from April to June 2022 increased 25% year-on-year, compared to a 21% decrease for the smartphone industry as a whole. The Economic Daily reports that it is doing quite well.
