iPhone 14 Pro Max camera module compared to iPhone 13 Pro Max

The camera bump on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to be the largest rear lens module Apple has installed on its flagship smartphone, and a new photo offers a rare glimpse of the Compared to previous generation devices, its bulge is more pronounced than ever.

All iPhone 14 models are expected to get an upgrade to the wide-angle camera on the rear of the device, but the iPhone Pro models could get major improvements to the main wide-angle camera and an update to the telephoto lens. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that the iPhone 14 Pro model will be equipped with a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, which will be a major improvement over the current 12-megapixel camera, as well as 8K video recording capabilities.

The new camera may also be capable of taking 12-megapixel photos through a process known as pixel binning, which combines data from multiple smaller pixels on the camera’s image sensor into a single “super pixel” to improve low-light sensitivity.

As you can see in the image above, this would force Apple to drastically increase the height of the rear camera housing on the Pro models. In this image from Twitter user @lipilipsi and shared by Majin Bu, viewed from the side, the camera ridges on the iPhone 14 Pro Max dummy are larger compared to the iPhone 13 Pro Max’s rear camera system.

According to schematics leaked in February, the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s camera bump is 4.17mm thick, up from 3.60mm on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The size of the camera bump is also expected to expand by about 5% in each direction, from the current 35.01mm wide to 36.73mm and 36.24mm high to 38.21mm.

Whether the sheer size of the camera module is worth the trade-off for enhanced photo capabilities will be up to the phone buyer, but suffice it to say that a case designed for the iPhone 13 model is unlikely to fit the iPhone 14 model due to the increased size.

After seeing sluggish sales of the iPhone 13 mini, Apple will focus on larger iPhone sizes this year, and we expect to see the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max. iPhone 14 Pro Max.

If Apple follows its previous release schedule, it is expected to unveil the iPhone 14 models at an event in September 2022.
