Apple Apple switched from Intel (Intel) processors to its own custom-designed Mac chips, and the transition is almost complete in two years. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s latest report, Apple’s next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros will be powered by M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. These two new MacBook Pros are under active development and testing and will be launched as soon as this fall.

While some reports have suggested that the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips could be Apple’s first 3nm chips, it seems increasingly likely that these chips will still be 5nm. But there will still be modest performance improvements on these chips compared to the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, and there’s also the potential for increases in GPU core count and unified memory (RAM).
The new MacBook Pro could be released as early as this fall, but it could be delayed due to supply chain and other factors. Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously mentioned that the next-generation MacBook Pro will enter mass production in the fourth quarter of this year.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release a new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips, and will most likely release the computer by the end of 2022, completing Apple’s transition to Intel.
The only remaining Intel-based Macs Apple sells are the pricier Mac mini configurations and the Mac Pro, both of which are expected to have updated M2-series chips by the end of the year.
