Watch YouTube videos in picture-in-picture mode

YouTube picture-in-picture logoYou have certainly noticed that since iOS 14 you can now also use picture-in-picture videos on the iPhone. The iPad-inspired function is not yet available in all video apps. You cannot use the picture-in-picture mode in the YouTube app on the iPhone. This is not a problem with a special shortcut. We’ll show you how it works.

Picture-in-picture videos in YouTube with a shortcut

The shortcut that enables you to watch YouTube videos in “picture-in-picture” mode on the iPhone is called Open YouTube PiP and can be downloaded for free. As soon as you click on the link, you get to the download page of the shortcut, where you tap on the “Receive shortcut” button below. On the next page, scroll all the way down and click on “Add Untrusted Shortcut”.

Don’t worry: the addition “not trustworthy” is due to the fact that the shortcut did not come from Apple’s own shortcut gallery and was not checked by the iPhone manufacturer. The shortcut will then be saved in the “My Shortcuts” tab in the Shortcuts app.

If you now open any video in the YouTube app, first go to the share button below the video. Then scroll to the right in the icon bar and tap on “More”. Then scroll down again and select “Open YouTube PiP”.

Start the video with a tap of the finger in the new view and go to the picture-in-picture icon in the top left. The video will then appear in a small window on the screen. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen or press the home button to close the current view and bring the video to the home screen.

Now you can move it as usual and zoom in and out using a pinch-to-zoom gesture or double tap. Slide it to the edge of the screen to hide it or open any app. The video then just continues.
