Yuzu is dead

Yuzu – the popular Nintendo Switch Emulator (and recently Citra – a 3ds emulator developed by the same team as Yuzu) is dead. Nintendo has settled with Yuzu for 2.4 million dollars and for the immediate removal of all source code, downloads, github repos, discord and Patreon. Here are my thoughts.

  1. Shit like this is why I hate Nintendo as a company. They make great products and games, but because of them repeatedly doing thing like this, I refuse to give them a dime.

  2. nintendo really likes to sue others , i wonder how squeaky clean they themselves are ? how "uncorrupted" they are at business and corporate level ? why they never get sued like apple / facebook etc etc

  3. Wanted to say that I am very excited to finally have my used, non EULA'D, Nintendo Switch Model HAC-001 and Serial XAW1. I also cannot wait to play my copy of Totk that I got new from a ebay reseller for $50.

  4. I didn't watch the video since I have no interest in Nintento games, hardware or emulators, but I just wanted to say that you may want to fix the video thumbnail to use "it's" instead of "its".

  5. If you guys paid for an non comercial emulator you really deserve these dark days. Emulation will continue and I think the free non comercial emulation is going to be a rule from now on, anyone paying again for emulated consoles or downloaded content (roms, isos, nso's, etc) deserve the rage and sadness generated by the profesional ninjas at Nintendo when your "heroes" (unethical devs) are caught. As I said earlier, good job Nintendo! show them where the money belongs to.

  6. İf nintendo released big games like zelda on steam like sony is doing i think it would've sold more than a milion and there won't be a reason to pirate it. I feel like old headedness of nintendo eventualy will bring their downfall if they continue current strategies

  7. No matter how hard they try they cannot stop this emulator. For example as of right now there thousands who are using yuzu and i bet that some of them will start developing the emulator on their own. Not to mention there is ryujinx if yuzu shuts down people will switch to ryujinx and they cannot do anything against that unless they want to play with laws. Anyway this will not shut down nintendo switch emulation rather inspire more emulators like yuzu and ryujinx.

  8. Well, Citra just disappeared from my dock. I agree with the statement. I'd never get a current era console game pirated. It's totally wrong. It was fun playing N64 games on Pc back on Pentium4, but the N64 original I had was just better experience… this is totally different magnitude…

  9. Listen, i love your videos and i support emulation but you're being deliberately intellectually dishonest here.

Nintendo emulates their own catalog of games and games that they've acquired the legal right to emulate.

You know that. Youre a 40+ year old man who has worked in tech. You know exactly whats going on.

  10. as an emulator dev yourself, I think you should maybe make a video about good practice about being a dev and being careful about avoiding piracy. Nintendo is not making an argument that the existence itself of yuzu promotes piracy, but nintendo has evidence apparently that the yuzu devs were actively involved in promoting piracy. Leaked content is still copyrighted. I fully blame the devs of yuzu for being sloppy for this happening. The statement that they didn't intend to promote piracy isn't true and they are settling to avoid discovery of possibly more heinous activity. a 2.4 million dollar settlement probably felt like a get out of jail card to them.

  11. The future of emulation is by blockchain, you pay money , the block chain generates a download link . And the smart contract option gives the download based on you os and you get the most up -to-date software.

  12. If you win you get back legal fees.

Yuzu must know something which is not public that they have done wrong otherwise folding like that makes 0 sense.

How have they got 2m as well to pay this off that is very iffy.

When companies act like this people need to refuse to support you are endorsing the way they do things.

  13. The paywall statement is incorrect. All the source code was released to open source. The paywall was only to get early access builds that might be unstable and are used for testing new features.

  14. Saying emulators cause a rise in piracy is like saying broomsticks cause a rise in witchcraft.

That said, a paywall for an emulator is going to raise heads. I hope this doesn’t stifle innovation on the emulator scene.

  15. Nintendo's argument is so stupid because they are saying that people are using yuzu to play games illegally. you can play the illegally obtained roms on a Nintendo switch, especially if you put it into airplane mode (like you dont even need to know how to take the console apart nor how to disconect the wireless signal. by law airplane mode HAS to turn off wireless signals). in short their argument is stupid because they said Yuzus only purpose is to play illigal roms but not all roms are illigal and yuzu didnt solicit roms. if their only proof is that it can play roms then nintendo is also in the wrong for facilitating illigal gameplay of their own games because anyone can run those copies of breath of the wild that were downloaded on the actual switch. (Basically nintendo has said yuzu can and therefore must be playing illigal roms im counter arguing that the switch can and most certainly is playing said roms).

  16. It's bs they blamed the community. The citra emulator takedown really sucks. I just got a 3ds and cannot afford to buy physical carts from scalpers. Especially since Nintendo took the store down. Also, Denuvo, the most ANTI-CONSUMER company in the gaming industry has been pitching Nintendo for YEARS. Saying it can protect it's content and giving Nintendo make believe figures of lost revenue. I haven't purchased a game with Denuvo in years. It is no more than malware and you don't actually own the game. If Nintendo hires Denuvo for switch 2 I hope there is a mass outrage. I have a switch and purchase my games. I also emulate them because the emulators are so much better than the physical hardware. Nintendo has been raking in RECORD profits for years. Emulation and piracy doesn't hurt their bottom line. Even with TOTK being leaked. It was the fastest selling Zelda in history. The people who pirate generally couldn't afford or would purchase the game anyway.

  17. Nintendo could just port their games to pc and stop emulation forever 😱
Too bad they’re trapped in the console exclusive mentality.

  18. Nintendo could release their games on PC officially and side step the whole thing as well as making a massive profit. Not only that, it would give their developers a chance to be more creative and add things they had to cut due to hardware limitations, and that's before you take into account the massive back catalogue. Its throwing money away not to do it.

  19. It highlights how in cases like this, it doesn't matter who is wrong or who is right, only who can outspend the other into submission. If any part of our legal systems need fixing in the west, then that's the most obvious one as right now its not about litigation its about intimidation, which in of its self should be a criminal offence.
