iPad Air: why I’m going back to the Pro (2020 comparison)

I’ve been using the iPad Air as my primary iPad for the past week, and I absolutely love it.
But as much as I love it, I’m going to return it and switch back to using my 12.9 inch Pro.
So in this video, I’ll tell you why the Pro is the best iPad for me and who I think should be skipping the Air to go Pro instead. I’ll also tell you why it’s probably a good idea not to buy a new iPad now. So stick around.

First, why is the iPad Air the best iPad?
The iPad Air is the best value for money iPad I have ever used.
It’s simply beautiful. I love the green version, which is more of a pale metallic green with a hint of silver. It’s not as vivid as it looks in the ads and I love that we now have more colour options. It feels like Apple has finally brought the whimsy back to its product line.
The Air is the perfect size. I have big hands, and I can hold the Air with one hand. You have to really stretch your fingers, so it’s not the most comfortable device to hold in one hand, almost hold the iPad with one hand. It’s kind of like the iPad Pro mini we’ve always wanted.

It’s lightweight and easy to use while scribbling down notes while using it like a clipboard.

And it also comes in LTE which means you’ll see an extra antenna line at the bottom of some of the devices.
Here too, the device is so beautiful. All the parts are perfectly colour matched, and it’s just so lovely to have so many options to pick and choose from.

And while on the topic of choice, when you start shopping for accessories, there are just so many colour options to choose from. It’s by far the most fashion-friendly iPad Apple has ever introduced as it’s just so easy to get the right colour combo to suit your style.
The colour options remind me of an Easter display at a high-end department store.

And if you don’t like the colours, you can go for silver or space grey options. These are the more “Pro” colours in the range. And I think a lot of people will mistake the Air for the more expensive Pro if you buy the more traditional colours.

The Air does not have FaceID, which I prefer. In my opinion, it’s more convenient to use than FaceID because it’s easier to reach for a button than bring your face closer to the iPad every time you want to unlock it.

Even though the Air has a faster processor than the Pro, I noticed some latency when using the Apple Pencil in Procreate. Apart from that, the Pencil works well on both devices.

The Air is absolutely the iPad most people should get. And I think it’s going to be the best iPad you’ll buy in a long time.

Let me be clear about this, even though the Air’s specs are not as impressive as the Pro that does not mean that it’s a downgrade from the Pro. Unless you’re using the Air side by side with the Pro, you won’t even notice the significant differences.

But, if you’re like me, and you’ve been using the iPad Pro, it will be a lot harder to switch to the Air.

The first reason is, of course, the screen size. 10.9 inches is a really convenient size, but it’s not big enough if you’re used to the 12.9 inch Pro. I watch a lot of movies on the iPad and movies just looked too cramped on the 10.9-inch display.

A lot of YouTubers complain about the Air not having a 120hz display. This is a luxury, nice to have feature, and as much as I love how smooth and clear this looks on the Pro, I didn’t really notice much of a difference when I was using the Air. The iPad has a great screen, the 120hz on the Pro just makes it about 5% nicer, in my opinion.

The Pro range also offers more storage options. I have the 512GB Pro, and I love not having to worry about running out of space. I don’t think it’s worth opting for the 1TB option. 512 is the sweet spot.

The Pro has better speakers than the Air. But not by much. I would not buy a Pro over the Air just for sound quality. The difference is not that noticeable.

The best reason not to buy any iPad now is that 5G is probably coming to the tablet next year. 5G is great on the iPhone 12, and I suspect it’s going to turbocharge what you can do on the iPad in the future.
