Create A macOS Monterey Installer ISO – For VirtualBox Running On Windows

In this tutorial, we create a macOS Monterey installer .iso, the first step toward performing a clean installation of macOS Monterey in VirtualBox for Windows.

This is the fifth major entry in our series running macOS on Windows, having previously undertaken installations of High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina and Big Sur, and this video forms part of a trilogy of tutorials which lead to the clean installation of macOS Monterey on VirtualBox for Windows.

In this chapter, we create the installer .iso which will be transferred to Windows for use as the installation media in a virtual machine. Unlike the vast majority of tutorials on the internet, we do not advocate the use of a pre-prepared hard drive file as the basis of the installation, eschewing this model in favour of creating our own installation media, thereby ensuring its provenance and reducing risks to our device integrity and data security. Following this method expressly requires access to a device running macOS, in order to successfully execute the “createinstallmedia” command, for which there is no comparable Windows equivalent.

In the second chapter of this series, we will configure our virtual Mac in VirtualBox, before applying typed commands which ensure that the machine will boot. In the final chapter, we run our virtual Mac and configure its primary drive, before performing the out-of-box experience setup.

Be aware that the performance of a virtual Mac in no way matches that of genuine Apple hardware, and you should expect significant lag, reduced hardware support, some app incompatibility and the absence of sound.

To avoid errors in this series, you are strongly advised to copy and paste the written commands found below, and reproduced at www.techfixflix.com. Any additional information and updates will also be posted there.

Please note that, in order to respect Apple’s intellectual property and avoid breach of copyright, we will not post or otherwise provide copies of the .iso file which this project creates.
