Samsung has a new ViewFinity 5K Thunderbolt 4 display that competes head to head with the Apple Studio Display. Can a smart display with a pop on camera compete with the design and integration that Apple offers?

  1. New sub! This is an excellent and fair comparison. Without being able to feel touch the Samsung, it looked like it was going to be awesome, especially with the vertical mode. Thanks for sharing the reality. Apple wins again on straight elegance and quality.

  2. I have S9 and the only reason I have acquired it over Studio Display is much better compatibility with Windows. I can confirm, speakers are average, camera as well, on top, if you use BENQ LED light on top of monitor then forget S9 camera or LED, not compatible (you can put it on side as workaround). Another small issue is that sometimes does not reconnect picture when re-connect to CalDigit4 dock (M2ProMax), remote ctrl switch helps. On the other hand, I am happy user because it is what I have expected, as long as Windows is the gaming platform and S9 works with it great, you can switch between them easily, Windows supports like Mac HiDPI resolution, you can control monitor and everything from remote if needed. If you have like me external studio speakers, I could recommend it as Mac/Win setup. I liked BENQ Pro 32" monitor more (KVM, dial), but they do not offer 5K/6K, alternative might be new Dell 32"6K, but camera there is also bulky in the middle (see LED lamp issue).

  3. I don't see any reason to part with my Studio display any time soon. The only thing that might have tempted me was if this was a 32 inch or heck even a 43 inch 5k panel. Now that would tempt me.

  4. You somehow forgot that the majority of computer users out there are not Mac users, and Apple Studio display simply cannot be used with most PCs that don't have thunderbolt 3 or 4, and even then the audio & webcam support for Windows is absolutely horrible. There is a huge market for the S9, namely people who don't use Mac and still want to have a good build quality 27" 5k display.

  5. If I was a Windows only user, I'd choose the S9. But I am an Apple mac user. The S9 is a deal breaker for being the same price as the Studio Display. I like the build quality and speaker of the Studio Display better than the S9.

  6. I bought an open box ASD at the end of December at Best Buy. Unfortunately, it was dead, and I could only return it, not exchange. The build quality was great, but it looked like it was stuck in a boot loop.

A sweet spot for pricing is $1200. However, I would highly recommend buying a LG C3 OLED 48 inch as a monitor.

Depending on finances, I may pick one up as a tax write off.

  7. Let be real. In 6 months, you will be able to get the samsung on sale for $800 – $1000. The Apple will never be on sale. So that sale price comparison should be taken into account.

  8. With Samsung, the picture setting keep changes. It just keep changing without no reason whatsoever. It has a Apple like hardware but Blackberry like software.

  9. Great review and if I'm not the wrong (one of) the first on YouTube .
Is the bezel of the ViewFinity S9 symmetrical all round as it appears the bottom one is not? After your review I actually now like the bezels on the ASD much more.

  10. Such a bummer. It looked promising when it was revealed but looking at the facts here at this price range is really a bad deal. Better find a sale deal on the Apple Studio Display with a VESA mount.

  11. Saying dropped the ball here. You can’t possibly price something the same as Apple and then put a bunch of plastic on it, give it weak speakers etc

Not enough people on the window side care for 5k monitors. Most are on the Apple side and need it for scaling

Apple has a HUGE advantage in the eco system aspect. For you to take a customer from Apple you have to offer a big price difference. Offering this at the same price is silly and yes if you count the Mayte displays and ability to adjust monitor up and down the Apple display cost 1999

But if you throw an aluminum chassis on the S9 ViewFinity and give it better speakers and Apples eco system it would probably cost MORE than the Studio display. The aluminum finish and speakers are EASILY worth the difference

I was interested in this but at that price ain’t no way in heck I m buying it

Now if they drop to like 8-900 which we know will probably happen I will consider buying

    I need 3 5k displays. I currently have a 5k iMac Pro and a 5k LG Ultrafine display and YES I need a 3rd

I lll replace those 2 with 3 individual 5k displays and a Mac Studio

When you think about I can go buy a refurbished Studio Display for less than this, it makes even less sense

  12. Either one would be a great step up for me – but even at the sub $1,000 mark – either seems too high to me. A 4K screen at sub $600 (ie. sub £500 for me in the UK) would suit more. Guess I'm not the intended user 🙂 One can dream I guess 🙂

  13. I remember all the squawking about the Studio Display when if first came out, but more and more it seems like a great display – and probably the display I'll be getting when I'm read to replace my 2020 iMac 5K.

  14. Thanks for the video. This display should be max $699, somewhat higher than a S8 4k. Would not be surprised if the price will drop soon. When I can get 2 for < $1500 I am in.

  15. Thanks Jerry! I was waiting for the review for so long for the VF S9. Very disappointing that only the bottom frame is made from metal. Maybe and hopefully the price goes down in upcoming black friday or in later discounts with other samsung monitors.

  16. The only way this is "competition" or "alternative" to Studio Display is if it's few hundred bucks cheaper – and I mean $500, not $300. This product makes no sense

  17. The Studio Display is pure elegance. The build in power adapter, which seems not so easy to copy looking at Samsungs gigantic external adapter. The sleek design with powerful build in speakers and a passable webcam. The premiere hight adjustable stand which is an engineering marvel. The perfectly symmetric bezels. The overall build quality. This package is not easily copied.

  18. Great review. Didn’t expect Samsung to use plastic on the build.

I think buyers of either display will cry their eyes out next year with LG Display roadmap having a 5K120 IPS panel listed for Q1/2 2024. So we should see that in monitors by next years summer. Probably teased at CES just like the Samsung 5K was.
