  1. Just AV1 10bit encode/decode, better I/O, wifi 7 and more overall efficiency would already be great to me. Don't really care about more CPU performance I think even the M1 family was powerful enough

  2. wanted to buy a 15" MBA this week but do you maybe think I should better wait until the next apple event in fall? or do they probably launch only the 13" model with an M3?

  3. I use my MacBook Pro M2 Max for my video editing mainly. When the M3 Max comes out, i will be upgrading to the M3 Max. Why, 2 things. 1. I need the performance if i am going to do some serious editing. Using this M2 Max 32GB, in some cases it still getting some lag because I work multiple B-rolls with Title and key frames for basic animation. Not to mention 3D work. 2. Since i have the MacBook Pro M2 Max, upgrading to M3 Max only make sense, not only cost wise but performance as well. Rather than wait 3~5 years down the road. I will keep doing this upgrade cycle, for the 4 Max, 5 Max and so on.

  4. lots of talk on speed and sites doing performance tests, but it is all meaningless to the typical Apple users. Once Apple came out with the M1 they hit the point of diminishing return to the typical Apple user. That means for what the typical Apple users they aren't going to feel or see any performance increase. Then M2 came with it's speed bump and even Apple reviews called no big deal for the typical Apple user. M3 the only perceived benefit to the typical Apple user would be battery life. The only people who are going to notice performance increase are people doing real production level work like rendering large videos and even those people only the ones that are working on large batches of work will notice some time savings.

As talked about before Apple and its SoC work is focused on future Apple work for Apple Car, and other AI projects. Even the focus on 3nm chips Apple talked about when M1 came out that for Apple Car and other AI devices they typically are used in small spaces with little or no cooling. So M3 will throw up some good performance tests, but those test aren't represented of what the typical Apple customer does. Unless you can see or feel a different all that extra speed isn't doing anything but giving you something to talk about.

  5. I recently picked up the 2020 MacBook Air with M1 chip. It's my very first Apple product ever. I really didn't need this laptop but I wanted it as I watch a lot of YouTube videos regarding this product. I really did my research before deciding on the M1 chip. I like the M1 chip since I'm a basic user. The power of this processor is 3.1Ghz and that is enough for me. I was a Windows user but I got something that totally wiped out my files even with Norton 360 and MalwareBytes. That was Windows 10 and that was it for me; having been with Windows from 98 to Windows 10. I turned to cheap Tablets to see if it was enough for me, but it wasn't. While deciding on getting Windows again, through my research I found the Chromebook. I kept coming back to it and then I decided on getting one. That was the HP 11.6" screen. I played with it for awhile and read about the ChromeOS. I really liked it and so my last Chromebook is an Asus 16" CX5 (2022) with a 12th Gen Corei3 and 8gb Ram and 128gb storage. The MacBook is my forever computer while the Asus will stop receiving updates in June 2030. I'm very happy with both of these laptops. Both have a terrific screen and good sound system. I heard about the M3 chip and thought I would see what it was. For my needs, what I have now is fine. I added a VPN and some Antivirus for my network.

  6. Would love to see Apple keep the M1 2.6 TFLOPS MacBook Air around for a very long time. Even make the design the SE of the MacBook Air lineup, and drop a new M series SOC in the same design.

  7. A great deal of the computer business, and many product creation businesses, for many years, is all a huge game, taking consumers for a very expensive non-stop ride. Many of the periodic upgrades / improvements could have been released years earlier, but releasing them in a timed process just pulls more and more money out of consumers, which could be used to cover other living expenses like health, housing, food, transportation. This whole process / game has gotten extremely old. 😑

  8. Your comparison is all wrong. An M2 is the M3 processor design + the M1 graphics in 5(ish)nm. The M3 will be the M3 processor design + the M3 graphics/ray tracing in 3nm of some variety. It is going to be a jump for the *graphics*, and if you ever play games you will want to stop and wait. *
    * Availability depends wildly on global military developments.
