Why I swapped my 2018 iPad Pro for an M2 iPad Pro

I bought a 12.9-inch M2 iPad Pro twice this year. The first time, it went back to Apple, but this time I decided to keep it for two very specific reasons. But was it really worth upgrading from the 2018 iPad Pro?

  1. I bought the M2 ipad pro 12.9 and it's the best tablet I've ever used. (and yes, I have 8 different tablets at home). It's the fastest in many applications and I use it for:
    – Wirelessly tether to my Sony A7RV
    – Artstudio Pro
    – Edit photos on the go using capture one
    – Edit video on the go using Final Cut Pro. Especially personal travel videos where I don't want to carry the 16" macbook pro around.
    – Watch HDR movies
    – When I'm not using it, it's a dock to control smart home devices.

  2. I ended up getting the 11 inch M2 pro last week. Been absolutely loving it. My First iPad ever.. Got my fiancé who works at home a purple mini when it came out i forget when that came out. Been loving it for media consumption around the house, photo and video editing on the go. We travel a lot for business and the 11 inch is the perfect sweet spot to just put in my bag. Girls a student so ended up getting it 100 off and a 100 dollar gift card on the spot after I bought it. Did a glass and a otter box military folio with it. Will probably now only want the Apple Pencil 2.

  3. Some of the reviews for this don't make sense. This https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA works as well as any power strip I've used. Plug in what you need, be sensible about it & keep it movin' The construction is plastic but it's a sturdy piece. It has a single toggle switch & the swivel jacks are useful as well. Plugged in next to Tripp Lite Isobar takes some of these reviews with a pinch of sumthin' – does what it says & functions properly.Had for about a month. Perfect no complaints will update if anything changes.

  4. I just went from a 2017 ipad pro 10.5 to the 2018 ipad pro 12.9 and i love it for gaming and i use my ipad mini 6 as a phone and just leave my iphone always in the car or in my wifes bag when we go out and carry the mini

  5. i have the 2020 a12z ipad pro. handles everything and video editing in Lumafusoon and fcpx alongside procreate animating multi layer logos in 10 bit and layering them on video tracks… audio x… it takes so much to even see a slow down- but after a buffer it handles it again. BUT…. davinci resolve after adding effects is enough to consistently crash it. but this is my fault because there is a literal prompt that says it was designed for the m series chipset… But yes, so far, the m series ipads are absolutely worth it and will cease to show stuttering. The gap on pro tablets and ipad pros are so wide with even the 2019-2018 ipad pros. The M series 2021+ are just overkill that allows you to guarantee that you can handle that 1% of tasks that only pros use.

  6. That display is enough of a difference for me. I love watching movies and shows. And man this and the M1 iPad Pro get 1600 nits peak brightness. This is better than my tv haha.

  7. Hi mark – watch so many of your posts I can’t find the one where you did a spot on new iOS features to come and horizontal MagSafe stands / docks . Which one do you recommend ? I remember quite a minimal one that you could angle . Thanks

  8. The reason I could never downgrade my iPad is because I play at half dozen games on the regular and close to it dozen throughout the year On my iPad pro M2 and I am able to have all the graphics turned up to maximize with out the iPad heating up or dying fast and I tried those setting on older iPads and it’s a no go

  9. i will be honest that i do not really see the point of these pro tablets. i am neither an apple user nor a professional anything so i am probably overlooking something but to me doing work on a touch device is a kind of ridicules and if you add mouse and keyboard you could just as well buy a laptop

  10. This is just a personal preference and gripe about the iPad pricing versions of Final Cut Pro and the fact you have to buy both even if you already own it on Mac!. But putting aside the having to buy both. It puts me of purchasing either, because my way of thinking is why should I pay £299 to buy it on Mac when it can be got for £49 a year on iPad….but why should I have to buy the iPad Pro for £1000 to get it for £49 a year on iPad which = I’m not going to buy it at all!. From my pov it’s a very un apple bizarre decision. It’s disjointed and immediately makes one think we’ll I’ll get davinci resolve studio, that way the one life time licence means I can use it on Mac, pc, iPad for no extra cost and it’s technically a more in-depth software. Im not sure if anyone else feels the same here or it’s just me. But it’s 100% put me off.

  11. Last week, I upgraded from an 8th gen iPad to the 11" M2 iPad Pro and paid $749 USD. As you can imagine, everything feels like a significant upgrade. I intend to use it as my consumption device and my on-the-go multiple display for my M1 MBA which I use for work. I almost bought a refurbished 2018 version but the age of the device caused me to pause and buy the current model. The beauty of Apple iPads is that it takes them several years to feel obsolete. Even my 8th gen was still giving me a good experience. I am thrilled what I got with this upgrade cycle, though.

  12. I have the 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 currently and there is nothing in the M2 which would make me want to upgrade. I don't use Logic Pro though. iPad Pro's are lovely but for most they are just very expensive media consumers, and my MacBook Pro is generally better at that too.

  13. One thing apple keeps missing is that most people just want a bigger screen… I would be perfectly happy with an iPad 10th generation with a 12.9’’ screen. I really need a bigger display and that’s the only reason I have the 2018 iPad Pro. But when I eventually need to replace it, I would really prefer to be able to go form something other than the “pro” versions, which I don’t need.

By the way, that is also the reason I have the M1 Pro Mac book pro, because of the 16’’ screen. If last year a MacBook Air 15’’ existed, I wouldn’t have though twice about buying it

  14. I bought my 12.9-inch M1 iPad Pro with magic keyboard case and pen when they were first launched. I was excited at the time because I thought we were finally going to get and a proper touch screen computer and splashed the cash on a 2 TB model with 16GB RAM. Up until the launch of Logic Pro for iPad, I had concluded this was one of my worst IT purchasing decisions, because I ended up with an iPad OS crippled oversized iPhone limited to run smartphone class apps. I did use my Apple developer account extract more use out of my iPad Pro, by putting it into developer mode (i.e. no jailbreak), so I could sideload apps such as the Dolphin emulator to run some of my favourite Nintendo Cube and Wii games and UTM to run some virtual machines. I also had to compile a utility, jitterbug, so I could run these apps without the having to tether my iPad Pro to second Apple device across a LAN … thank you, Apple, for being so obtuse. Logic for iPad Pro has softened that purchasing decision hurt. It's a brilliant iPad app and I impressed with what it can do, and how readily I can move Logic Pro projects back and forth between my iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. The jury is still out on whether I would ever replace my M1 iPad Pro with another M3 / M4 iPad Pro etc. iPad OS is the worst operating system made by Apple for a large screen M series iPad Pro. OK, iPad OS is fine for my sixth gen iPad Mini and there have been some improvements such as stage manager and proper second monitor support, but not enough and not quick enough. I just wish they would give their large screen iPad Pro customers the choice to decide whether to load iPad OS or a touch enabled version of Mac OS (I am sure they have already done this at Cupertino). I would even pay for a software license for an iPad Pro version of Mac OS!

  15. Me having lag on m1 with 16 gb ram cuz of my heavy workload waiting for iPad os to be updated to properly use the ram better or for m3-5 before I can justify even considering upgrading. It’s not unworkable lag literally in like a 1percentish situation in my niche. And it doesn’t crash. But I’ll admit it’s annoying cause I know it’s due to the os not the specs 😾
