for those who are stuck on the login screen use a extended keyboard!
thank you, thank you, thank you! It just needed a good clean. I put a netting veggie bag over the end of my vacuum cleaner brush (no desire to lose keys!) and tilted it around while vacuuming. FIXED IT! Did the rest of my computer keyboards! xxxx

THANK YOU!! I messed something up WHILE cleaning my keyboard, such that I kept getting a bracket when I pressed the left-hand shift button, and a "+" sign every time I pressed the right-hand shift button. Your solution #2 saved the day!!!

What happens if you cant actually login because the password continues to type the wrong letters and characters. I even tried using another keyboard and that too typed the wrong characters.

Thank you very much resetting NVRAM fixed my MacBook Pro.
Don't know how it became active, I was simply typing away on Discord, and suddenly my keys started coming up as the Option-key special characters. Out of all these options, the only thing that worked was resetting my NV-Ram. Thank goodness, for that. Goodness, Apple, I've never experienced this technical difficulty, before. Brand new Macbook Air, too, barely 2 months old.
I am unable to login to machine itself, if i am able to login, with gui i can change, for me keyboard Showing as British, cross checked by typing key 3 getting .. How to change the keyboard from Recovery mode terminal
