M1 Pro Photogrammetry Testing using Apple Object Capture API compared to 3DF Zephyr

Photo Catch running on M1 Pro 16gb RAM Macbook Pro

3DF Zephyr running on ASUS Zephyrus G15 Ryzen 9 5900HS 16gb RAM 3070

I am really impressed with apples new object capture API. I am using Photocatch application which runs on Monterey OS. So far I have had amazing results with any data I feed into the app. You can get higher resolution results from some other paid sofware but they need masking and cropping of images and often still dont turn out decent results most of the time. I did two turntable video scans and one freehand. Both turntable scans failed with 3dfzephyr, the handheld result was not bad.

3DF Zephyr cost $180
Photo catch is free

  1. Quick observation, you were using the FULL mode in photoCatch which limits the polygons to 250k, if you want more definition/details it's better to use the RAW mode, I think RAW allows up to 30m polygons and it's slightly faster because it doesn't have to decimate the model.

  2. That was really low IQed to use a video to capture the objects. No matter how high the shutter speed is, the images will ALWAYS have some degree of motion blur. It is always, EMPHASIS ON ALWAYS, best to use still images. Facts Buddy! Also, your video needs a human being to talk in it.

  3. 3DF did much better with a stationary object (chair) versus the turntable. This tells me that the lighting changes on the object while under rotation cause issues with 3DF and instead you should focus on stationary objects and lighting when doing photogrammetry.

Photo Catch seems to handle both cases well.

  4. Now this looks like a killer feature. just to be clear, that can take in video from an android, no fancy iphones with lidar required?

Looking at the 14" 16gb with photo editing in mind and if that feature works that well and you could take bigger scans, like rooms with it, it could very well be the tipping point.

  5. interesting results. do you feel the overall better machine is the M1 Pro or G15? latest reports seem to suggest 3060 level performance for the M1 Max (sometimes 3080 depending on test) and the 3070 Nvidia graphics on the G15 seems to score a little higher on benchmarks, so they seem to be very close graphics score wise. The M1 10-core may have better single core scores and also a bit better multicore scores than the 5900HS. The display on the G15 seems to be pretty darn good, with 165hz and is smooth (I own this laptop), but the M1 Pro display goes up to like 1000 nits and should be fairly smooth with 120hz also. The thing about the G15 is even just watching youtube, the fan will intermittently come on for a second or two and then off, then back on.. and there is some good warmth coming out of it just for that. For more intensive tasks, it's even more pronounced.

Anyway, just curious what your thoughts on the 2 are, having had tried both.
