  1. I have the new M2Pro MacBook Pro 14" and I've found that it works best when shut down on an evening 2 to 3 times a week. Leaving it constantly on/sleep mode causes it to act weird at times – freezes etc. This Mac replaces my 14 year old MacBook which still works to this day – the hard drive lasted 9 years!!!! I shut that down EVERY night. Even iPhones and Apple TV needs restarts once a week or so IMO. Do what works best for you!

  2. I love all the valuable info youre giving here Arthur, but you think you can find a way to make you videos less rattling? Im always trying to catch my breath whenenever I watch your videos.

  3. I think the video is great. I just upgraded to a M2 air and I appreciate the time you took to do a thorough and researched video. Please ignore certain comments and continue to do videos in your own unique style. If viewers want to watch a shorter video… then they can find one and click on it or watch shorts. Thank you for your hard work 👍😉

  4. I can't believe a video is made about this, people buy laptops with Windows, all their problems will be solved.

And if they break they don't lose a fortune.

I have used Macs for many years, their stability in their system is unique but it is exhausting, they are always aware of its fragility.

  5. I have 2 Intel MacBook Pros loaded out, upgrading to M3 soon. I leave my Macs on 24/7 and one is 6 years old and still daily driven by my wife: School, browsing, etc. The other is 4 years old and is daily driven by myself for engineering work: Web App development, 2D game dev on Unity, etc.

I have never had a single hiccup from either MacBook Pro and we've never intentionally turned them off, we just close the lid. They work as well today as when i bought them.

I also have a Razer Blade with a 3080, its 3 months old and I already had to RMA the thing for motherboard failure. I'll stick with my MacBook for anything besides gaming (I build my own desktops) and looks like Apple is trying to get into that market now too, so we'll see if the new M3 or the next Apple chip replaces my gaming laptops.

  6. if this youtuber thinks that shutting down your mac is bad because the ram gets cleared then I dont think anything else he says should be taken with any ounce of seriousness. This is his personal preferences rather than anything based on fact.

  7. Unfortunately, I barely believe a word that comes out of his mouth… nothing is based on evidence but just hearsay and the odd story here or there – and he adds caveats for those stories too. Shut down your Mac if you want, leave it in sleep if you want – I bet BOTH end up with the exact same results in terms of battery life, endurance, component wear etc.
    Look at the two scenarios:
    1. Shut down your machine and the battery is completely unused and component wear is absolutely minimal as no power passes through components, however starting a machine back up requires significant battery usage as EVERYTHING needs to be found on disk, loaded into RAM, components are cold and go through more expansion from cooling, heating processes.
    2. Put your Mac to sleep – battery drain is small but constant, many components are always active in a low power state being constantly worn and heated. But battery drain is very constant and limited when all apps are already loaded and the OS is in place in RAM leaving the SSD, NVME alone. Component wear is minimal because they don't go through disabled, enabled states which makes them run cold, then quite suddenly warm to hot…

Take your pick, there's no disadvantage / advantage to either

  8. I need help Ive never done a backup on my macbook pro I bought it is 2016 still runs good but I think I have a virus ? I want to back it up on external drive but if I do so will that infection come back if I restore it to the state as I bought.. Reading comments you all seem to pretty much know all about the Mac I can't find a video that tells this.. in my network settings on win (local) netbios it says the name of my macbook is currently being used, could be wifi I dunno? Anyone?

  9. You didn’t mention the M2 in this video a single time. Video is at best a generic issue that you admit really doesn’t make a huge difference. Title is misleading and click baitey 🤦‍♂️

  10. Thanks for this video, I am going abroad for two months and leaving my MacBook Pro M1 at home. I was wondering how I should leave it. I presume in 2 months the sleep mode may deplete the battery down to 0%, or perhaps charge it to 100% then shut it down. I'm not sure what to do, please can you advise? Thanks.

  11. Actually, it's not a problem to turn off daily. First, there are no tests that damage components, and not really any tests are run on startup. Second, for most apps, macos saves the memory when you shutdown or even exit the app. Yes power draw is minimal, but it's not nothing. If you aren't using it for a while it's probably worth shutting down. Also background functions will also work when you aren't pushing device to the limit or completely idle. But if it requires it first, it will do it first. Either on startup, or while you are running faster tasks.

  12. It’s the same with the iPad Pro. Always left on standby, and it should never run so low on battery that it will die. There’s a registry of events, and this is not a good thing. Same with laptops. It really doesn’t use that much battery whilst idle.
