During its WWDC 2023 keynote, Apple unveiled the second-generation Mac Studio. The pro-tier workstation, which starts at $1,999, is powered by the new M2 Max or M2 Ultra chip. The new Mac Studio is still similar to a “Mac mini Pro,” positioned as a larger and significantly more powerful version of Apple’s entry-level desktop. However, the updated variant now has the extra horsepower of the M2 Max or M2 Ultra to excel even more at demanding tasks like 8K video editing, 3D modelling, or music production.

According to Apple, the M2 Max model is up to 50% faster than the first-generation Mac Studio and four times faster than the most powerful Intel-based 27-inch iMac. Furthermore, the company claims that the M2 Max can render up to 50% faster in After Effects, while developers can code up to 25% faster in Xcode. It has a 12-core CPU, a 38-core GPU, and up to 96GB of memory, with a bandwidth of up to 400 GB/s.

The computer has four Thunderbolt 4 ports on the back, a 10Gb Ethernet port, an upgraded HDMI port, and two USB-A ports. On the front, there are two USB-C ports and an SD card slot.

The M2 Max starts at $1,999 for the base model. Apple will begin taking preorders for the new Mac Studio today, with the device expected to ship next week.

  1. Feels like these reviews are always biased towards 'video editing' users. However, if you already have an m1 max studio and are using it mostly for audio production related work, then upgrading to the M2 Max Studio will probably not yield any significant improvement in performance. Don't get sucked into the hype. The Studio M1 Max is a beast. If you're doing mostly video work, then maybe the M2 Max will provide a slight performance improvement.

  2. The M2 Studio should have killed off the top end MacMini. Why spend the same amount for a top end Mini when you can get the Studio for the same price and get way more processing power. Top end Mini with 2TB and 32GB of RAM is $2599 and you have a meh Pro M2. Studio for $2599…2TB and 32GB BUT you get a MAX M2! AND, with the Studio I can drive my three 2560×1440 27" displays. Base Minis make sense. But top end Minis…do not seem like a good value anymore.
